# How to add your materials

Add each jar, box, label and insert you package with, with who you buy it from, how many come in a pack and what you pay. Prophitable works out what one piece costs, and every package that uses it is costed from that.

## Add a material

1. Go to **Materials** and click **Add Material**.
2. Under **General Information**, enter the **Name** and choose the **Supplier** (not in the list yet? click **Add Supplier**). UPC, Brand and Description are optional.
3. Under **Package Size**, enter the **Net Quantity Per Unit**, which is how many pieces, or how much length, is in the smallest pack you'd open. Choose **pc** for things you count (jars, boxes, labels) or a length such as **ft** for things you cut (ribbon, tape).
4. Under **Purchasing**, enter what you pay:
   - **Unit**: the price of one pack.
   - **Case**: if you buy it by the case, the case price and the **Units per Case**.

If you buy it both ways, fill in both. Prophitable uses whichever costs less per piece.

5. Click **Save**.

Save won't go through until the material has a name, a supplier and a price.

## What you'll see

The material's cost per piece is on the Materials list, in the **Cost / UoM** column. The gift box above comes 10 to a case for $21.90, so it shows **$2.19**. A package that uses one box carries $2.19 for it.

When the price changes, edit it and save. Prophitable lists the packages and products that use the material, and **Update All** re-costs them.

> [!TIP]
> Your jar supplier raised prices? Change the price here once. Every package and product that uses the jar is re-costed, and you can see which products now earn less.

## Stock is optional for now

You don't need to count what's on your shelf to get costs. Receiving a purchase order adds the stock for you. To enter what you have today, open the material, go to **Stock** and click **Add Stock**.

## Have a lot of materials?

Click **Import** on the Materials page and upload the spreadsheet you already keep. You'll see what it read and can fix anything before it's saved.
