# How to add your default sales tax

Set your sales tax rate once under Settings > Tax Rate, and every new sales order adds it. Sales tax is kept out of your profit, because it's the state's money, not yours.

## Add your default sales tax

1. Go to **Settings** and click **Tax Rate**.
2. Enter your rate in **Default Sales Tax** as a percent, for example 9.5.

3. Click **Save**.

Only an admin can change it.

## What you'll see

Every new sales order starts with this rate in the **Tax Rate** field under **Total Sale**. You can change it on any order. Orders you've already made keep the rate they had.

A customer location with a **Tax Exemption ID** (in its **Order Terms**) gets 0% instead.

The tax shows as **Sales Tax Collected** beside **Order Profit**, and the profit doesn't include it.

> Sales tax passes through your hands on its way to the state. Leaving it out of profit means the number you see is the money you actually keep.
